Keesha Mitchell has devoted much of her legal career to protecting the rights of vulnerable Ohioans. Beginning in the Franklin County Public Defender’s Office and later in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, she has worked to protect indigent clients; juveniles; abused, neglected and dependent children; and the elderly.
Mitchell spent the last 10 years of her 21-year tenure in the Attorney General’s Office as chief of the Health Care Fraud Section, which polices both Medicaid and Workers’ Compensation.
As director of the state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, she oversaw a strike force charged with punishing and preventing abuse and neglect of nursing homes residents. On the national level, she served as lead negotiator and was a past president of the National Association of Medicaid Fraud Control Units, helping return $800 million to state Medicaid programs from settlements with multinational companies.
Mitchell was assistant chief of the Health Care Fraud Section for seven years and was cross-designated as a special assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. Before that, she served four years as an assistant attorney general in the Workers’ Compensation Unit, protecting Ohio taxpayers by prosecuting providers, claimants and employers who abused the system.
Mitchell graduated from Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law in 1991 and received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Mount Holyoke College.
