Youth Protection Training FAQ

Who needs to complete this training?

Training is required for any youth program personnel with care, custody, and control of a youth/minor in an Ohio State University youth activity or program. Training is optional for anyone wanting to learn about how to keep youth safe, protected, and cared for by reporting abuse, neglect, and trafficking when suspected or observed.

Will valid training be reset with this launch?

No. If you have completed either version of the Ohio State youth protection training it will be valid for one year from the date of completion.

How long is the training?

Trainees generally complete this training in 30 minutes but may take less or more time, depending on your personal pace.

What is the difference between this training and the old one?

This training has an updated look and feel, including fewer images, removal of the final test, and increased opportunities for learner engagement throughout the training.  In addition to the new look and feel of this training, learners will also experience:

  • Several short knowledge checks throughout rather than a lengthy test.
  • Newly added content on child trafficking, responding to allegations, and specific allowable and prohibited conduct when working with minors.
  • Identification of red-flag behaviors for potential abusers.
  • Simplified reporting requirement for suspected or observed abuse.

The training is available by searching “youth protection” in BuckeyeLearn

What if an individual does not have an Ohio State name.#? (Grace has the link for external user BuckeyeLearn registration, but individuals should have indicated this when registering, in which case, they will also receive instructions for this)

For how long is this training valid?

Training is valid for one year from the date of completion.

How can I access and accessible version?

How can I retake the training before it expires?

The training is available to be re-taken at any time on the BuckeyeLearn home page.

Why am I being asked to complete this training?

Program personnel that are added to a program roster and designated as having care, custody and control of a minor, they are automatically sent instructions on training. If you feel you were added to the roster by mistake, please contact the program administrator or youthpolicy@osu.edu.

What options do I have instead of online training?

Alternate training (including an in-person option) may be available by request depending on the availability of the Director of Youth Protection. Allowance of an alternate training is only valid when authorized by the Director of Youth Protection.

Will I be tested on this information?

The training contains several short knowledge checks throughout, but there is no mandatory written test. Program personnel may be asked to demonstrate understanding of core concepts (e.g. how to report suspected abuse, prohibited activities, etc.) by the program administrator, or during a site visit by the director of youth protection.
